The Family Balance Sheet

The money playbook nobody taught you, written for the kitchen table.

  • Short modules built on the series: the asset test, your balance sheet, net worth over income, the cash-flow plan, the debt payoff order, buffer and habits, and a ninety-day plan.
  • A working planner for Google Sheets and Excel, including snowball and avalanche side by side on your own debts.
  • Printable worksheets and a family money conversation guide for partners, kids and extended family.

How to read your page

The asset test

Ask one question about everything you own: does it put money in your pocket, or take money out, every month? A car is an asset on paper, but if it costs you every month it is not working for you.

Net worth over income

Income is what you earn. Net worth is what you keep. A big salary only builds a family if the gap between earning and spending grows with it.

Margin and keep rate

Your margin is what's left after everything. Your keep rate is that margin as a share of take-home pay. It is the single best predictor of where you'll be in five years.

Buffer runway

How many months your cash would cover essentials. A starter buffer comes first, then three to six months once high-interest debt is gone.

“Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.” Proverbs 27:23 (KJV)
