Swimming & Diving: ages and seasons

Typical starting ages
Learn-to-swim lessons start very young. Competitive age-group swimming commonly starts around age 6 to 8 once a child can swim a length.
Seasons
Year-round club teams train in short-course (fall to winter) and long-course (spring to summer) seasons. Summer leagues run at neighborhood pools.

How to choose a swimming program

  • Clubs and travel teams usually hold tryouts or evaluations. Ask about the total season cost (dues, uniforms, travel and tournament fees), how often they practise and compete, and how playing time is decided.
  • Leagues and rec programs register by season, often several weeks before play starts. Ask whether teams are balanced by skill and whether every child gets playing time.
  • Check that coaches have passed background checks and current safety training (for example SafeSport and concussion awareness).
  • Confirm the age or grade rules and any birth-year cutoff before paying.
