Youth soccer: ages and seasons

Typical starting ages
Rec soccer often starts around age 4 or 5. US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer group players by birth year (for example U8 to U19).
Seasons
Most rec leagues play in fall and spring. Many clubs train year-round, with tryouts commonly in late spring or summer.

How to choose a youth soccer program

  • Competitive clubs hold tryouts mostly in spring for the next season year. Ask which league the team plays in (for example ECNL, MLS NEXT, state leagues), total yearly cost including travel, and coach licensing.
  • Rec leagues such as AYSO regions and city programs register by season and place every player. Ask about game day, field location and volunteer requirements.
  • Futsal and pickup sessions build touch and quick decisions. Confirm the indoor venue, age groups and whether you need to register ahead of time.
  • Many YMCAs run youth leagues, clinics and camps, and some offer financial assistance. Programs vary by branch, so ask your local Y what it offers for your child’s age.
  • Boys & Girls Clubs often include youth sports in low-cost memberships. Programs vary by club, so ask about leagues, ages and transportation.
  • Check that coaches are background-checked and current on SafeSport and concussion training.
  • Soccer uses birth-year age groups, so confirm the right group before you register.
