Youth ice hockey: ages and seasons

Typical starting ages
Learn-to-skate and learn-to-play programs often start around age 4 to 6. USA Hockey groups players by birth year (8U, 10U, 12U and up).
Seasons
The main hockey season runs from fall through winter, with spring and summer leagues at many rinks.

How to choose a youth ice hockey program

  • Clubs and travel teams usually hold tryouts or evaluations. Ask about the total season cost (dues, uniforms, travel and tournament fees), how often they practise and compete, and how playing time is decided.
  • Leagues and rec programs register by season, often several weeks before play starts. Ask whether teams are balanced by skill and whether every child gets playing time.
  • Check that coaches have passed background checks and current safety training (for example SafeSport and concussion awareness).
  • Confirm the age or grade rules and any birth-year cutoff before paying.
