Youth basketball: ages and seasons

Typical starting ages
Many rec leagues start around age 5 or 6 (often kindergarten or first grade). Club and AAU teams usually group players by grade or age, roughly 8U to 17U.
Seasons
School and rec basketball is mostly a winter sport. Club and AAU seasons commonly run in spring and summer.

How to choose a youth basketball program

  • Club and AAU teams usually hold tryouts in late summer and early spring. Ask about total season cost (dues, uniforms, travel, tournament fees), how many tournaments they play and whether playing time is guaranteed.
  • Rec and community leagues register by season, often 6–10 weeks before games start. Ask whether teams are balanced by skill, how many games and practices there are, and whether every player gets equal time.
  • City and county recreation centers usually run seasonal youth leagues and open gym or open play times. Check the parks and recreation department for registration windows and fee waivers.
  • Many YMCAs run youth leagues, clinics and camps, and some offer financial assistance. Programs vary by branch, so ask your local Y what it offers for your child’s age.
  • Boys & Girls Clubs often include youth sports in low-cost memberships. Programs vary by club, so ask about leagues, ages and transportation.
  • Check that coaches have passed background checks and current safety training (SafeSport, concussion awareness).
